A Brief History of Schreiber Furniture
Schreiber Furniture has a fascinating history that is deeply intertwined with the evolution of British furniture design. The brand was established in 1957 by Chaim Schreiber, a Polish refugee immigrant who initially made radio cabinets for Dansette and other larger electrical manufacturers²⁴.
Chaim Schreiber bought a bankrupt furniture business in 1957 and rebranded it under his own name, Schreiber¹². By 1967, Schreiber was challenging Lebus and Gomme for domination of the furniture market²⁴. Schreiber Furniture was hugely successful in the 1960s and 1970s, becoming a major manufacturer of bedroom furniture at the value end of the market¹².
In the 1970s, Schreiber introduced furniture centres, taking complete control of distribution, as well as manufacture¹²⁴. Despite facing economic challenges in the mid-seventies, the company continued to be one of the biggest names in furniture².
The company merged with GEC in the 1970s¹³. After the merger, Schreiber Furniture came under the ownership of GEC-Schreiber Limited, a new subsidiary company created by GEC¹.
Schreiber Furniture was later bought out by the MFI Group, and on MFI's bankruptcy in 2008, the brand rights were bought by the Home Retail Group in 2009¹. In 2016, the Home Retail Group was purchased by the UK retailer Sainsbury's, who quietly dropped the Schreiber brand the following year in 2017¹.
