A Brief History of G-Plan Furniture
G-Plan Furniture has a storied history that is deeply intertwined with the evolution of British furniture design. The brand was launched in 1953 by Donald Gomme, the grandson of Ebeneezer Gomme, who had founded a successful fine woodworking atelier, E. Gomme Ltd., in 1898¹².
Ebeneezer Gomme's small workshop in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, grew into a larger factory facility, riding the wave of voracious demand for furniture². His son took over in 1911, and among the many successful ranges of sideboards, cabinets, and tables, the biggest achievement for E. Gomme Ltd. was their pioneering concept of matching dining room sets².
Donald Gomme's launch of the G-Plan brand marked a post-war furniture revolution. He took the then-radical step of selling sofas without matching chairs³. This innovative approach, coupled with an extensive range of household designs covering everything from sideboards to nest tables, empowered people to buy into a better way of life at home².
G-Plan Furniture experienced heightened success during the Midcentury Modern period⁴. Despite facing challenges such as timber shortages in the post-war years and the introduction of restrictions on hire purchase in the early 1960s, the company continued to evolve¹².
In 1987, the Gomme family decided to retire and sold the business to the then directors, who, three years later, sold it to the Christie Tyler group of companies¹. Since 2005, G-Plan has been a subsidiary of Sofa Brands International¹.
Today, Take Me Home is proud to carry on the legacy of G-Plan Furniture, offering its timeless designs to those who appreciate the blend of history, quality, and style that each piece represents.
