A Brief History of Avalon Furniture
Origins and Legacy: The roots of Avalon Furniture trace back to Yatton, Somerset, in the United Kingdom. Originally named Wake & Dean, the company underwent a transformation in the 1960s when it became Avalon. This shift coincided with the changing tastes of the 1950s and 1960s, which brought a thirst for contemporary style. Avalon’s designs embraced minimalism and new materials like Formica plastic laminates. Their furniture catered to the mid-century modern aesthetic, capturing the spirit of an era marked by innovation and elegance.

Avalon and Meredew: A Connection? Interestingly, Avalon and Meredew (another British furniture manufacturer) were often mentioned together. While I had no idea about their direct connection, both companies left their imprint on mid-century design. Avalon is perhaps best known for its ‘ladderax’ type flexible wall system—a modular shelving and storage solution that allowed homeowners to customise their spaces.

Legacy and Influence: Avalon’s legacy endures. Their mid-century designs remain sought after by collectors and enthusiasts. Whether it’s a sleek wall unit or a minimalist coffee table, Avalon’s pieces evoke nostalgia and continue to resonate with those who appreciate design and craftsmanship.
